Clockwork by Philip Pullman
My rating: 3 of 5 stars
This is a creepy and interesting novella. I read it, in part, because I didn't want to commit to re-reading the His Dark Materials trilogy. This gets across some of the same weird feeling -- as if an adult suddenly found her or himself put back into a child's body.
The story has a lot of casual violence, and it remains clever throughout. It is very short, though, and as a result its much less ambitious than the trilogy. (Chiefly that comes through in the way the characters remain largely two-dimensional.)
