Death Thing by Andrew Hilbert
My rating: 4 of 5 stars
It's just as twisted and bizarre as everyone says, but it's funny (and fun) too. Yes it's violent, but the violence is cartoony, somehow safe. I was expecting a grim chainsaw massacre kind of thing, but it turned out to be comic, one perverse image after another competing for laugh/shock value.
At a moment when Donald Trump is still doing well in the Republican primaries, it's also a nice attempt at imagining the anger/frustration-over-impotence of the late-middle-aged man. I'm not saying this is political analysis, but it plays with the fantasies in that direction.
Clever work, and a fast-moving pleasure to read.
